October 16-20 (Sunday-Thursday)
Country Inns, Food, Farms & Fun
Massachusetts & Vermont
Day 1:
Welcome Aboard! Travel in comfort aboard our
deluxe motor coach to the “Bay State,” Massachusetts. After checking
into the Comfort Inn located in Great Barrington, Massachusetts
for the night, we are treated to a delicious dinner at the historic
Red Lion Inn located in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The Inn has been
famously depicted in Norman Rockwell’s paintings. (D)
Day 2:
After a hearty continental breakfast we
depart for the Norman Rockwell Museum. Take a self-guided
tour through the museum to see the world’s largest and most significant
collection of original Rockwell art. Next we depart for “The Green Mountain
State,” Vermont for Hildene, the Georgian Revival mansion home of
Robert Todd Lincoln. Robert was the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln
to reach adulthood. To provide you with the best possible tour experience we
will first view a brief video orientation in the Welcome Center. A
guided tour of the mansion follows the video presentation, and includes a
musical demonstration on the 1,000-pipe Aeolian organ and access to the
formal gardens. A box lunch is included in a covered pavilion.
Following our tour we depart for Rutland, Vermont. After checking into
the Best Western Inn and Suites, our hotel for the next two nights,
we depart for a delicious dinner at the family owned and operated
Swiss Farm Inn. (B, L, D)
Day 3:
After a hearty continental breakfast we
depart for the New England Maple Museum. Here we will view a
slide show that chronicles the maple sugaring process on a Vermont family
farm, followed by a tasting of different grades of maple syrup. Next
enjoy a live cooking demonstration at Café Provence. Entertaining
us “in the kitchen” will be Chef Robert. He will share cooking tips, recipes
and offer up a tasty sample of what he has prepared just for us! After lunch
on your own we visit a family owned Alpaca Farm. Here we will
learn about these gentle animals, related to llamas, and marvel at exceptional
quality of their fleece. Be sure to stop by and visit the gift shop before we
depart for dinner at the charming Waybury Inn, and the memorable
Inn setting of the “Bob Newhart Show.” We return to our hotel for
a good night’s rest. (B, D)
Day 4:
After a hearty continental breakfast we
return to the “Bay State,” Massachusetts. Upon our arrival in the
Village of Deerfield, a 350-year-old National Historic Landmark, we will
tour a tree lined street of 14 museum homes. The street is known as “one of
the loveliest streets in New England.” Next a stop is included at the Yankee
Candle Company. Shop at the world’s largest candle store. Here watch a
demonstration of Colonial candle-making, try your hand at candle dipping and
explore the many holiday display rooms, including the Bavarian Christmas
Village. After lunch on your own at Yankee Candle we depart
for the Sturbridge Host Hotel, located in Sturbridge, Massachusetts
for the night. After checking into our hotel we depart for the Quabbin
Reservoir. Marvel at the beauty as you enjoy a presentation featuring
music, photos, and narration by a professional photographer that explains the
fascinating history of four “discontinued” towns that were flooded to create a
massive reservoir for Boston. Before returning to the hotel, we conclude our
day with a delicious hearth-roasted prime rib dinner at the historic and
beautiful Salem Cross Inn. The Salem Cross Inn is furnished with
antiques and home to the country’s only known 17th-century roasting
jack! (B, D)
Day 5:
After a buffet breakfast we depart for
Sturbridge Village. Walk through the serene grounds and explore this
re-created 1830’s rural community with more than 40 restored buildings. In
addition to the buildings, highlights include costumed “Villagers”, heirloom
plants and animals, daily special activities and events, the Museum Gift Shop
and the New England Book Store. After our visit, we depart for home, our taste
buds filled with the delectable and the distinct flavors of Massachusetts and
Vermont. (B)
