Ladew Topiary Gardens
& Lunch at Friendly Farm
Harford County, MD
Called “The Most Outstanding Topiary Garden
in America,” Ladew Topiary Gardens is a wonderful place to celebrate
Springtime. Start your tour of the grounds of the Ladew Topiary Gardens with a
guided tour through the Ladew House which is filled with English
antiques, paintings, photographs, sketches and fox hunting memorabilia. See the
most unusual room in the house, the Oval Library, complete with a secret door.
The room is included in the book “100 Most Beautiful Rooms in America”.
Originally built in the late 1700s by the Scarff family, the historic Manor
House is over three centuries old. Mr. Ladew purchased the house and 250-acre
property in 1929. The tour will continue in the gardens where you will
see Mr. Ladew’s planned 15 flower gardens, each on a different theme, ranging
from a formal Rose Garden and perennial borders, to a Cottage Garden, Water
Garden and Berry Garden. The crowning glory of the 22-acres is the topiary -
trees and shrubs trained and trimmed into ornamental shapes. You may wish
to enjoy the gardens nature walk, a self-guided 1.5 mile trail
through the woods and fields of the Ladew property. Following our tour we
depart for the Friendly Farm Restaurant for a delicious family style
lunch. Relax and enjoy the warm friendly service, scenic surroundings, and
the great food that has long been associated with dining at Friendly Farm
Restaurant. Later before returning home, do some shopping at the restaurants
country gift shop which includes a medley of unique gifts, scents, sweets, and
an assortment of delightful baked goods.
