July 27 (Wednesday)
Woodrow Wilson Presidential Estate
Staunton, VA
Today we travel along scenic highways en route to
historic New Market, Virginia. Upon our arrival we will enjoy a
delicious buffet lunch and entertainment at the Johnny
Appleseed Restaurant. Following lunch, we will depart for historic
Staunton, Virginia, the birthplace of our 28th President, Woodrow
Wilson and home of the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum.
President Wilson taught us to protect democracy both at home and abroad. To
provide you with the best possible tour experience we will first view the new
Visitor Orientation video in the President’s Shop. Next step inside
President Wilson’s birthplace, a 19th century Presbyterian Manse,
for a guided tour and discover an authentic pre-Civil War home setting
that comes alive through period furnishings and Wilson family heirlooms. Also
included is a self-guided tour of the museum where treasures tell
the story of the 28th President’s life and times, including a
recreated World War I trench and the President’s Pierce-Arrow limousine. Plan
to spend some time visiting a new World War I exhibit in the
Museum. This exhibit will simulate “Life in the Trenches” - a fully immersive
state-of-the-art experience taking visitors to enemy lines during the First
World War. It will include a trench, a bunker, a command center, a triage area,
lighting and sound effects, and photographs. The World War I “Life in the
Trenches” experience is a one of a kind East Coast exhibit. You can also view
President Wilson’s Nobel Peace Prize in the improved Post-war Peace Gallery
exhibits. Before we depart for home we conclude our day spending some time
enjoying the estates Victorian-style terraced gardens. A fast food stop will be
made on the return trip home.
