Montpelier & Michie Tavern

Blue Ridge Mountains, VA

Today we depart for the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains for a day of sightseeing.  We begin at Montpelier, the estate of James Madison, our fourth U.S. President and the Father of the Constitution.  To provide you with the best possible tour experience we will view a film presentation on the restoration of the Montpelier estate.  The film highlights the $25 million dollar architectural restoration plus the Presidential Detective Story:  Rediscovering the Furnishings and Décor of James and Dolley Madison.  Next step inside Montpelier and see how an 1820s mansion has re-emerged from the past as some of the nation’s best craftsman and artisans peeled back the layers of history.  The guided house tour covers the rooms on Montpelier’s first and second floors, followed by access to the estate’s grounds.  Plan to spend some time enjoying the gardens and grounds.  The 2,650-acres which comprise the grounds features rolling hills, spacious horse pastures, and spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Also included is the Madison Family Cemetery, the Slave Cemetery and much, much more.  This afternoon enjoy a delicious buffet lunch served at the historic Michie Tavern by servers in period attire in a rustic Tavern setting.  Before we depart for home we conclude our day with a guided tour of Michie Tavern.
