Riding the Rails of West Virginia

“Memorial Day” Weekend Get-Away

Day 1: Welcome Aboard!  Travel in comfort aboard our deluxe motor coach to “The Mountain State,” West Virginia.  Upon arriving at the Blackwater Falls State Park, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch at the lodge.  Next we view the beautiful Blackwater Falls.  The falls black appearance is caused by the leached tannic acids from the fallen hemlock and red spruce trees.  Blackwater Falls is one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia.  Numerous observation points afford panoramic views of the half-mile wide canyon.  We continue onto Davis, West Virginia, where we spend two nights at the Canaan Valley Resort, a beautiful, modern lodge in a high mountain valley.  Tonight as the sun sets over the mountains enjoy a delicious dinner, followed by entertainment at the resort.  (L, D)

Day 2: After breakfast we depart for the New Tygart Flyer, a classic streamliner from the 1930’s.  We will embark on a four hour round trip train ride through West Virginia’s majestic wilderness.  The excursion features a stop at the “High Falls of the Cheat.”  Situated in a spruce and laurel grove far from any human activity, the falls, 150’ wide and 18’ high, are accessible only by rail.  Disembark the train and you will find a set of trails and viewing platforms.  On board, you will find a souvenir shop, comfortable seating, and a family style buffet lunch that is included.  Following our train ride we stroll across the rail yard to the American Mountain Theatre.  Settle back and enjoy a journey through America’s musical past highlighting the popular musical styles of each decade beginning with the early 1900’s through today.  After the show we return to the resort for dinner, and a good night’s rest.  (B, L, D)

Day 3: After breakfast we depart for Romney, West Virginia for an excursion on one of America’s premier scenic railroads, the Potomac Eagle for a 3 ˝ hour narrated train ride that will both amaze and delight you.  A special feature of the Potomac Eagle railroad is that frequently along the route there are sightings of bald eagles.  A hot lunch will be included during your excursion.  Following our train ride we depart for home with many fond memories of our Memorial Day weekend get-away, and of our delightful railway adventures!  (B, L)
