June 27-29 (Sunday-Tuesday)
Newport & Block Island
Rhode Island
Day 1: Welcome Aboard! Travel
in comfort aboard our deluxe motor coach to the legendary town of Newport,
Rhode Island, and discover a world of exceptional American elegance and
inspirational architecture. After checking into our hotel for the next two
nights, we are treated to a delicious dinner at a popular local
restaurant. The hotel is ideally located across from Newport’s Easton’s Beach,
and is only a short walk away from the famous Cliff Walk, a public access
walkway along the coast. After dinner we meet our step-on guide, and
depart for a “twilight” narrated driving tour of Newport’s two famous
scenic routes. The first will be Bellevue Avenue, which is lined with
opulent “summer cottages”, and next we travel along Ten Mile Ocean Drive,
where we will view more stunning estates and enjoy spectacular views of the
ocean.
Day 2: After a hearty continental breakfast we
meet our step-on guide, and depart for a tour of The Breakers, the
grandest mansion in all of Newport. The Breakers is a 70-room villa built for
Cornelius Vanderbilt II, featuring rich marble interiors, gilded rooms, and
spectacular ocean views! Later we depart for Point Judith where we will
travel by ferry to Block Island, “the Bermuda of the North”, and
noted for its great beaches, wildflowers, and miles of stonewalls and rolling
terrain. Upon our arrival, you may choose to spend time strolling along the
beach, or you may wish to browse the charming shops and restaurants along the
main streets in Old Harbor. Following lunch on your own
we explore the island and discover more of its magic and natural beauty on a
narrated bus tour. A delicious dinner is included at the
National Hotel before we cruise back to Newport.
Day 3: After a hearty continental breakfast at
your leisure, you may choose to explore Newport’s Easton’s Beach or enjoy
a leisurely walk along the Cliff Walk. The Cliff Walk showcases both the
natural beauty of Newport’s landscape with its wildflowers, birds and shoreline,
and the architectural history of Newport’s gilded age. Strolling along the beach
or the Cliff Walk makes for a memorable and delightful morning. Later enjoy some
free time for shopping and lunch on your own at the Brick
Marketplace. After lunch we depart for home with fond memories of some of
New England’s historic landmarks and its miles of pristine coastline.
