Victorian Christmas in Cape May

Cape May, NJ

Return to the era of Victorian opulence and experience the feeling of Christmas in the 1890s in Cape May’s only Victorian house museum, which emphasizes Victorian Christmas traditions and decorating.  Enjoy a Tea Luncheon in the Carriage House or under the festive tent in the Garden Patio.  Delicious tea sandwiches, scones, tea breads, soups and salads and much more will be traditionally served in an elegant manner typical of the Victorians.  While you are finishing your meal, we will begin a Victorian Christmas Lecture.  Much of what we moderns associate with the secular celebration of Christmas comes from the Victorian Era, including Christmas trees, Christmas cards, or image of Santa Claus, and many other features.  You will learn how Prince Albert brought these traditions to England from Germany when he married Queen Victoria, and how they then spread to America.  After lunch, feel free to browse the Physick Estate’s museum gift shop or view the Carriage House gallery exhibit.  Later we arrive downtown to visit two Victorian Inns complete with Christmas decorations and listen to stories of by-gone days.  A tour of the inns parlors, porches, dining rooms and more is provided by the innkeeper at each inn.  Rest stops will be made both en route to Cape May and on the return trip home.  Happy Holidays!
