We begin the day by visiting the oldest crab
processing plant on the Chesapeake Bay, the J.M. Clayton Seafood Company.
The tour of this historic facility will allow you to see first hand how “Blue
Crab” is prepared for market from the steaming rooms, to passing through the
amazingly skilled hands of the crab pickers and packers. Next we arrive for a
salad, rolls and non-alcoholic beverage at Kay’s Country
Kitchen with a panoramic view of the Dorchester County Airport. A tour
of Historic High Street lined with stately mansions from the 18th and 19th
centuries follows, before we travel to the colonial village of Oxford.
Along the way, our step-on guide will entertain and educate us with some
memorable tales from Oxford’s 300-year history, and we learn how Oxford came to
be the “First Port of Entry” on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in colonial days. A
delicious lunch is included at the Masthead Restaurant which looks
out on the Tred Avon River. Please provide a meal choice when making
your reservations. Your choices are Crab Cake or Chicken Breast
Sandwich. After lunch, we are off to the inland town of Denton.
We’ll pass miles and miles of farmland, and our guide will offer stories of the
early settlers. We will tour the Museum of Rural Life which is a tribute
to the farming community of Caroline Community. Inside the museum is an
original log cabin and numerous artifacts from colonial times. Next we head
over to the Emerson House for dessert. You will have some leisure
time to browse the small shops along the street while enjoying your afternoon
treat before we depart for home.
