The play takes place in the home of Louise and
Theo Markes, a couple whose conservative existence is shattered when Louise’s
bloomers fall down in public. Although she pulls them up quickly, Theo is
convinced the incident will cost him his job as a government clerk. Louise
becomes an overnight celebrity and the momentary loss of her garment encourages
potential infatuated boarders to show up at the front door in hopes of renting
the spare room. Oblivious of their amorous objectives, Theo splits the room
between them, happy to collect rent from both the foppish poet and the whinny
hypochondriac. A delicious family style luncheon (baked ham and roast
turkey), is included at Hickory Bridge Farm.
