Bedford County Dine Around

Bedford County, PA

We are joined by our step-on guide in historic Bedford County and begin our tour with a stop for photos at the Claycomb Covered Bridge which spans the Raystown branch of the Juniata River.  En route we learn about the history of Bedford County, including the newly renovated Bedford Springs Hotel, (the summer White House of President James Buchanan).  Next we travel west on the Old Forbes Trail and learn about early transportation in the area.  Upon arrival at our next destination, the Jean Bonnet Tavern, you will dine on soup, salad and rolls while being entertained by colorful local tales of “skirts that rustle in the night”, bodies uncovered in the basement, and a card game that turned into a tragedy.  The journey continues as we visit the historic Schellsburg Log Church, (built in 1806), and cemetery with its interesting gravestone epitaphs.  Our next stop is the Snook Covered Bridge, which crosses Dunnings Creek.  The bridge features glistening white boarded sides, a native stone abutment, and is sure to provide calendar worthy photos.  Next is a brief visit to the Reynoldsburg Fish Culture Station that allows you the opportunity to visit the modern visitors center, see thousands of trout and learn about hatchery operations.  Its “meat and potatoes” time at the Slick’s Ivy Stone Restaurant, your next destination.  Surrounded by the fine antiques and collectibles on display throughout the restaurant, your main course is served by waitresses dressed in colonial costumes.  Next we visit the Bowser Bridge, the final covered bridge included on the tour.  Our next stop is the Fisher’s Country Store, a Mennonite operated store which features a large array of bulk foods and candles.  We have saved the best for last!  Relax as you enjoy a seasonal 18th century colonial dessert served in the Pendergrass Tavern at Old Bedford Village.  A perfect way to end a day of dining and learning about the early colonists in historic Bedford County.  Rest stops will be made both en route to the Bedford County area and on the return trip home.
