West Virginia

Day 1: Welcome Aboard!  Color surrounds you on our exciting West Virginia Fall Foliage tour.  Upon arrival, we visit the Mountain Made Artisan Center.  Stroll through “mountain made”, an artisan co-op housed in an old company store, featuring the works of artisans and authors for sale.  Next we arrive at Blackwater Falls State Park for lunch at the lodge, and to view the beautiful Blackwater Falls.  The falls black appearance is caused by the leached tannic acids from the fallen hemlock and red spruce trees.  Blackwater Falls is one of the most photographed sites in West Virginia.  Numerous observation points afford panoramic views of the half-mile wide canyon.  We continue on to Davis, West Virginia, where we spend two nights at the Canaan Valley Resort, a beautiful, modern lodge in a high mountain valley.  Tonight enjoy dinner, followed by entertainment, featuring a storyteller or mountain musician as the sun sets over the mountains.      

Day 2: After breakfast we depart for the New Tygert Flyer, a classic streamliner from the 1930’s for your four hour round trip train ride through West Virginia’s majestic wilderness.  The ride features a stop at the “High Falls of The Cheat.”  Situated in a spruce and laurel grove far from any human activity, the falls, 150’ wide and 18’ high, are accessible only by rail.  Disembark the train and you will find a set of trails and viewing platforms.  On board, you will find a souvenir shop, comfortable seating, and a box lunch will be included during your excursion.  After our train ride, we return to the resort for a delicious dinner, and a good night’s rest.

Day 3: Enjoy breakfast, at your leisure.  With part of the morning free you can choose to sit, relax, and experience the comforts of the resort.  Late morning we are off to the Rocky Gap State Park, and the Rocky Gap Lodge, overlooking Lake Habeeb, in this lovely manicured state park.  Delight in the lovely view from the beautiful lakeside dining room over a delicious lunch.  After lunch we depart for home taking with us memories of our fall foliage adventure, and the fresh Western Maryland air!
