Day 1:
Welcome Aboard! Today we journey aboard our
deluxe motor coach north towards our destination of Newfoundland, Canada
and its many amazing natural wonders. We overnight in Maine. Dinner is
included.
Day 2:
After breakfast we depart for St. John,
the largest city in New Brunswick. Before checking into our hotel for the
night, enjoy a delicious dinner at The Falls Restaurant. The
restaurant is located high above the Reversing Falls, a scenic natural
phenomenon where the water reverses direction and flows uphill through a rock
gorge.
Day 3:
Following breakfast we board the ferry
to Digby, Nova Scotia. Upon arrival in Digby you will have some
leisure time to explore local shops before we travel on to Halifax, and
check into our hotel for the night. Dinner is on your own.
Day 4:
After breakfast we meet our step-on
guide and depart for a short driving tour of Halifax,
including such highlights as the Public Gardens, the Halifax waterfront, and the
historic downtown district. Later we depart for the harbor town of Sydney.
On route we will be making stops at scenic locations for photo opportunities.
We overnight in Sydney. Tonight join your fellow passengers and meet our
Canadian Tour Director who will be traveling with us for the next several
days. Dinner is included.
Day 5:
Following breakfast we board the
Marine Atlantic Ferry for a 14 hour crossing to Argentia, Newfoundland.
Once on board you will find we have fully reclining reserved seats await us for
a comfortable passage. During the crossing you may choose to take in a movie,
stroll around the deck, purchase meals, or simply relax before we reach our
destination. After disembarking we travel to St. John’s the capital city
for the Province of Newfoundland. St. John’s is one of the oldest port
communities in North America. We check into our hotel for the next two
nights.
Day 6:
Wake up in the Far East of the Western World!
After breakfast we meet our step-on guide, and depart for a
narrated driving tour of St. John’s. The tour will include the quaint side
streets of a thousand colors, the Victorian architecture of St. John’s downtown,
St. John’s waterfront, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, the charming
Quidi Vidi Village, and a panoramic view from atop Signal Hill. In
the afternoon, we journey to Bay Bulls for an unforgettable
nature cruise to Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Millions of Atlantic
Puffins gather here, making it the largest Atlantic Puffin sanctuary in North
America. Thousands of humpback and minke whales also make this their home. End
the day by visiting rugged Cape Spear, home to a lighthouse on the most
easterly point in North America. We return to St. John’s for a delicious
dinner and a good night’s rest.
Day 7:
After breakfast we travel through the
spectacular Terre Nova National Park, which is part of the ancient
Appalachian Mountains. Terre Nova was created to protect 250 square miles of
boreal forest, coastline and Newfoundland’s natural habitat. Next we stop at
the North Atlantic Aviation Museum of Gander to learn all about Gander’s
strategic position in the world of aviation, and its important role in World War
II and beyond. Sit in a DC-3 cockpit, see Quickie 1 and a 1939 Tiger Moth, and
many other artifacts. We continue on to Grand Falls and visit the
Salmonid Interpretive Centre to learn about the life cycle of the
Atlantic Salmon. We check into our hotel for the next two nights.
Dinner is included.
Day 8:
Following breakfast we depart for the
charming outport of Twillingate, home to a colorful array of fishing
wharfs and pastel houses perched on the cliffs. We visit Longpoint
Lighthouse, where we will be able to look for icebergs and whales as they
make their way down Iceberg Alley. Next we visit the Prime Berth and
learn about the areas fishing heritage. We end the day by visiting the Mary
March Regional Museum to see displays featuring 5000 years of local history,
and the creation of the modern paper industry. Tonight become a true
Newfoundlander at a “Screech-In” where you sample a local screech and
kiss the cod. Lunch is included.
Day 9:
After breakfast we continue west on the
Trans Canada Highway to Shallow Bay in the heart of Gros Morne National Park,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many natural vistas await you as we travel
through this fascinating geological wonder. Travel deep into the park and
explore the hidden fjords, stark mountains and experience the dense forest of
Atlantic Canada’s largest park. Enjoy a scenic boat cruise (weather
permitting) and learn about the geological rarity of the famous
Tablelands. Be on the lookout for the whales and bald eagles that frequent
the deep waters of the fjord, and learn the history of the small villages
nestled on the shores. We overnight in the Gros Morne area. Dinner
is included.
Day 10:
Following breakfast our exploration of
Gros Morne National Park continues with a visit at the Lobster Cove Head
Lighthouse. The historic lighthouse has marked the marine approach to Rocky
Harbour and the entrance to Boone Bay since 1897. Next we visit Broom Point.
It juts raggedly into the Gulf of St. Lawrence like a worn version of its
namesake. The marine mammals, birds, and fish of the cold Gulf waters have
attracted people to this site for more than 2,300 years. Later we continue
south to Corner Brook, located on the Humber River for a short driving
tour before arriving at our hotel for the night. Dinner is included.
Day 11:
After breakfast we depart for Port Aux
Basques, and ferry to North Sydney. We overnight on lovely Cape
Breton Island. Dinner is included.
Day 12:
Following breakfast we depart for the
beautiful capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax. Upon arrival, enjoy some time
at your leisure to explore this lovely city before checking into our hotel for
the night. Tonight after a delicious dinner, enjoy the pageantry of the
Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo from your reserved seating. We
bid farewell to our Canadian Tour Director this evening.
Day 13:
After breakfast we travel across Nova
Scotia to board the CAT ferry for a 6 hour crossing from Yarmouth to
Portland, Maine. Once on board you may go to the movies, spend time at the
casino, purchase meals, or just relax before we disembark in Portland.
We overnight in Maine.
Day 14: Happy 4th of July!
Following breakfast we depart for
home taking with us rich memories of Newfoundland, its charm, its hospitality
and its unforgettable beauty!
